Amazon.co.uk Review

Everything clicked in this 1994 action hit, from the premise (a city bus has to keep moving at 50 mph or blow up) to the two leads (the usually inscrutable Keanu Reeves and the cute-as-a-button Sandra Bullock) to the villain (Dennis Hopper in psycho mode) to the director (Jan De Bont, who made this film hit the ground running with an edge-of-your-seat opening sequence on a broken elevator). This is the sort of movie that becomes a prototype for a thousand lesser films (including De Bont's lousy sequel, Speed 2: Cruise Control), but Speed really is a one-of-a-kind experience almost anyone can enjoy. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

From the Back Cover

Hold on tight for a rush of pulse-pounding thrills, breathtaking stunts and unexpected romance in a film you'll want to see again and again. Keanu Reeves stars as Jack Traven, an L.A.P.D. Swat team specialist who is sent to defuse a bomb that a revenge-driven extortionist (Dennis Hopper) has planted on a bus. But until he does, Jack and passenger Sandra Bullock must keep the bus speeding through the streets of Los Angeles at more than 50 miles an hour - or the bomb will explode. A high-octane chase of suspense, non-stop action and surprise twists, Speed is a joyride sure to keep everyone on the edge of their seats.

a candidate for best action film ever made
Review date: 2008-09-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

A candidate for best action film ever made,Speed has a simple storyline, but really good dialogue, stunts and direction and Dennis Hopper playing one of the most memorable psychopaths in film history. If someone told you the basic plot of speed you would laugh at the idea that viewers would believe it or be entertained by it for 2 hours. But you will believe it and you will be entertained by it. This is probably the movie that Keanu Reeves,Hopper and Sandra Bullock will be remembered for most.

excellent thriller

Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) stars as Officer Jack Traven, a professional police officer who is caught up in a deadly game with Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper). Payne puts a bomb on a city bus, and if the bus drops below 50mph, it will explode.

Jan De Bont (Twister) delivers twists and turns in this high paced edge of your seat action thriller.

A plot which has Oscar winning special effects, Speed will keep you on the edge of your seat with fast buses, trains, lifts and explosive scenes justifying the thriller genre. The plot to keeps you guessing and engaged with character situations essential.

Hopper's character is marvellous. One of the best villains I have seen, Howard Payne is in control and a genius at causing problems for the public and police force as he demands money for his trouble.

Keanu Reeves also portrays his Officer exceptionally well, portraying him as very professional and organised and adventurous. The relationship between Traven and Payne makes the film even more engaging and exciting as it becomes very personal.

It's the suspense which makes this film. As the bus speeds around the city it faces many obstacles in order to get through unscathed and when unbelievable circumstances arise it's up to Traven and the passengers to tackle.

When certain scenes have featured you may question the realism of the event and I myself have a few views about that, but the bottom line is that this is a high paced energetic thriller with stunning effects, plot, scenarios, and acting and is not to be missed.

a must watch

Great Little Movie.
Review date: 2007-11-18 Rating: 8 out of 10

Nothing extremely special going on here other than thhe Reeves Bullock sizzle. It's a 'good' movie. Action packed and the sort of thing you can enjoy on TV without fear there's going to be too much violence or ad language or porn. In other words you can watch this thriller with your 10 year old children and a bag of popcorn without fear. Enjoy the film, just don't expect anythig life changing or too amazing.

FARES PLEASE

Great storyline and plenty of action.

A commuter bus has bomb rigged to explode if the speedometer drops below 6omph. The bus is travelling busy city streets and has to crash its way through traffic jams in order to escape to open highways. The bomber (Dennis Hopper) has a hidden camera on board and a remote detonator to prevent the passengers being unloaded whilst the bus is moving.

Our hero, SWAT team member Keanu Reeves has managed to get on board and sets about foiling the diabolical plan.

Fast moving and exciting film.

good enough film
Review date: 2007-04-03 Rating: 6 out of 10

the debate as to whether keanu reeves can actually act gathered pace,no pun intended, with speed (1994),a film where a vengeful villain plants a bomb on a bus which will explode if the bus falls under the speed of 50 miles per hour, reeves here in places is so wooden that the part of pinnochio was crying out for him.Regardless of that this is still a high octane thriller with good performances from dennis hopper and shock, horror, yes ,sandra bullock who ends up as a heroine to reeves hero.
The film moves along nicely, there is the odd moment which defies reality but show me a blockbuster where that isnt the case, but speed is a film that has lasted the test of time, more or less and wont humilate you if you are seen with it in your dvd collection.
