Amazon.co.uk Review

When you get lost between the moon and New York City (ahem), chances are you'll find yourself taking another look at this hit comedy starring Oscar-nominated Dudley Moore as the charmingly witty, perpetually drunken millionaire Arthur Bach. Arthur falls in love with a waitress (Liza Minelli) who doesn't care about his money but unfortunately Arthur's stern father wants him to marry a Waspy prima donna. The young lush turns to his wise and loyal butler (Oscar-winner John Gielgud) for assistance and advice. Arthur was a huge hit when released in 1981, as was its Oscar-winning theme song by Christopher Cross. Few remember that the movie was, sadly, the only one ever made by writer-director Steve Gordon, who died less than a year after the film's release. Consistently funny and heartwarming, Arthur was hailed as a tribute to the great romantic comedies of the 1930s. --Jeff Shannon

Synopsis

Arthur, a very rich, drunken ne'er-do-well, falls in love with a working-class shoplifter just as he is scheduled to marry a properly pedigreed society member. But if he doesn't marry the heiress, he will not inherit a $750 million trust. So Arthur turns to his loyal butler, who is slowly dying, for help. The butler wishes to see Arthur prevail and so manipulates a situation in which the true lovers will come together--and get the loot. But that is a lot easier said than done.
ARTHUR is a charming romantic comedy that features the role that Dudley Moore was born to play. Whether taking limo trips through Central Park with prostitutes, playing with his train set, having a bath in a top hat, or wanting just a tuna-fish sandwich, Arthur, perfectly portrayed by Moore, is one of the most likable onscreen characters in cinema history. John Gielgud as his loyal, dry-witted butler is an out-and-out riot. And Liza Minnelli turns in one of her sweetest performances as the woman Arthur's family demands he stop dating. Steve Gordon's film is an absolute joy to watch, a perfect piece of celluloid entertainment that never fails to please no matter how many times one has seen it.

27 Years on, and still one of the funniest films ever
Review date: 2008-04-25 Rating: 10 out of 10

I have just watched `Arthur` 27 years after first watching it, Utter Joy.
Anyone who is a little down on life should go to their doctor and get a prescription for this film. Sit down and play the dvd, and laugh, and laugh, and laugh, Cry a little, use up a few tissues, and just enjoy. You will feel as right as rain after this.
Brilliant cast, perfect timing. One of the all time best.

Classic Comedy
Review date: 2005-09-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

What can I say about this film. It is pure comedy pefection. Dudley Moore is wonderful as Arthur Bach, the alcoholic millionaire who finds love in the arms of Liza Minnelli. Maybe not a great film for all the family due to it's language anf general theme but a really good laugh for the older viewer. I really hope that they get around to releasing Arthur 2: On the Rocks region 2 as it is only avalible as Region 1 at the moment.

Arthur
Review date: 2005-08-11 Rating: 8 out of 10

I read somewhere that when Sir John Gielgut died, one tabloid newspaper reported the headline "Dudley Moore's Butler dies at 96"

Obviously this film was just a minor diversion in the great man's career, but it does say something about the impact this film made on the film watching public that such a sentence would be reported.

"Arthur" is the story of rich, carefree but alcoholic playboy Arthur Bach. With nothing to do all day but cruise around in his chauffeur driven Rolls, shop and drink, he struggles to find a purpose to his life, and more importantly to find a partner in his life to share it with. At the moment he is mothered by his very English butler, Hobson (Gielgut), who tries to keep the romantic Arthur in line with a never ending series of waspish putdowns and acid comments. In order to keep his family fortune though, Arthur's family are most keen he is safely married off to beautiful socialite Susan Johnson (Jill Eikenberry). Unfortunately though, Arthur doesn't love Susan, he loves the streetwise shoplifter he met in downtown New York, Linda Marolla (Liza Minnelli).

Minnelli and Moore play superbly off each other and the glances and expressions they throw to each other (and the camera) are a joy to watch. Gielgut is superb, with the cutting edge of a Stanley knife he steals every scene he appears in. Also well worth watching is Barney Martin as Linda's father, who has a delightfully crumply face as he breaks when he hears the millionaire Arthur won't be marrying his daughter.

At nearly 15 years old this film has remained as fresh and as funny as ever. It's wonderfully innocent, crisp and funny and is extremely highly recommended.

Arthur- Dudley Moore's finest film
Review date: 2004-01-16 Rating: 8 out of 10

Dudley Moore is Arthur, the born-millionaire, alcoholic play boy who's daily routine consists of picking up prostitutes with a scotch on the rocks, spending ridiculous amounts of money and a scotch on the rocks and driving through central park in his stretch limo with a scotch on the rocks, until he meets the lovely Linda (Liza Minelli) the love of his life while she shoplifts from a designer store. All seems well until Arthur's family threaten to cut off his billion dollar inheritance if he marries Linda.

This is a tremendously witty and entertaining film with a wonderful cast of actors. It would appear this role was written only for Dudley Moore to play and John Gielgud is fabulously sarcastic and direct as Arthur's servant.

This film is a must-see 80's classic.

Still funny after all these years...

Dudley Moore plays Arthur, an inherited millionaire playboy with a significant passion for alcohol and excitement. When his family insists that he must dry up, grow up, and marry the daughter of a wealthy businessman, Arthur has other plans...

A hilarious movie from the outset. Dudley Moore is superb in the title role, with John Gielgud pulling off an oscar winning performance as the butler and father figure. A great movie.
