Donald Pleasance is uncanny - in a new, good way - in this fair adaptation of the beloved Barchester Chronicles' first two stories. It became imprinted on my mind decades ago when I first saw it - on WGBH/PBS Masterpiece Theatre in the USA - and I have not forgotten it. The emotionally satisfying & very subtle resolution to a love affair is presented carefully enough for the Victorian reticence & sentimentality to shine through. Anthony Trollope was very good at exploring the question, "What is a gentleman?" for his mid-Victorian compatriots - and in illumining what is now for us a forgotten & foreign society.

An excellent BBC mini series about the Church and the Victorians. Excellent acting, beautiful settings, and amusing sub-plots make for some very worth while entertainment.
Trollope done full justice

This excellent comedy of manners and church morality with a superb British cast faithfully renders the plot and tone of the original books. Donald Pleasance is outstanding as the gentle warden, playing against type of his usual screen roles; Nigel Hawthorne is a delight as the bombastic archdeacon; and who can ever forget Alan Rickman's marvellously odious Obadiah Slope! BBC Drama at its best
Rickmaniacs Rejoice!

This series is a faithful adaption of the novels by Trollope and all the actors starring in it do a fantastic job, particularly Alan Rickman and Donald Pleasance. Nigel Hawthorne in also on top form. My original reason for watching was my interest (obsession?) with Rickman, but I found the whole experience extremely enjoyable and very funny in places. my only question is: when will it be on DVD?
A great adaption of the Trollope Novels!

The video series of the Barchester novels certainly serves the written versions justice. A particular suprise is seeing a younger Alan Rickman at his finest, alongside a great cast of UK talent. A pleasure for those who have read the Trollope novels!
