The first moment I heard this...
Review date: 2007-07-29 Rating: 10 out of 10

...pre-release a few years ago, I couldn't believe it.

The strains of John desperately trying to sing 'Strawberry Fields' in C instead of the published A, alone in his bedroom with a manky tape recorder, looped with three successive versions sets the tone for the whole album.

Paul's clarity of voice on 'Your Mother Should Know' and the first demo of 'Fool on the Hill' are brilliant. The fluffs (Paul screwing up and swearing), the quirks (John's 1-2-3 'Sugar-Plum-Fairy, Sugar-Plum-Fairy' on Day in the Life), Paul breaking a glass and John ribbing him for it and the omniscience of Sir George Martin, overseeing all.

As Paul says in a silly voice prior to launching into a military-drum-beat-backed 'Your mother Should Know':

'You want us to do it again George?...OK this time, with ciggie in mouth..

Frankly Paul you could do it with a tuba up your a** and it would still sound magnificent!!!

If you're a Beatles fan, buy volume two of anthology first: and turn up the volume.

Make your own 40th anniversary Pepper album
Review date: 2007-06-18 Rating: 10 out of 10

With the '40 years ago today' anniversary unmarked & uncelebrated by Apple/EMI (they knew the world media would do it for free anyway) and no re-master, it's worth investigating Vol.2/Disc.2 (1967/early 1968)of the often unfairly criticised Anthologies. I prefer the punchy stripped down mix of 'Good Morning Good Morning' to the official version. This and the alternate/out-fakes of the other Pepper & Mystery tour tracks, '67 singles, plus oddities such as 'Only a northern song','You know my name' & 'Across the universe' are really enjoyable with an element of surprise due to the unfamilar order. Along with some Yellow Submarine Songtrack & Love re-mixes (and without resorting to bootleg recordings), it's possible to compile a very interesting Psych period Beatles album that will make you brain prick up your ears and over-come the familarity of the original versions.

The soundtrack of our lives.
Review date: 2007-06-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

This series of c d`s which culminated on dvd or video was a fantastic insight into the fab fours everyday work. The different takes on songs with warts and all make the collection so authentic. In many ways The Beatles were already sliding into oblivion after Sgt peppers lonely hearts club band after which time it was almost solo projects under their own name. However, the intrigue for all of us who have been fans since 1962 is that any new production of the boys is still received with open arms. This second of three helpings of the anthology series includes the pepper era and more. I can only recommend that in time you purchase all three because it is an exciting series from the soundtrack of our lives.

More to recommend than Volume 1
Review date: 2006-04-24 Rating: 8 out of 10

Incorporating the years 1965 to 68 this set covers the most creative period of the Beatles middle years. Although more interesting than Volume 1 you still need to wade through a lot of filler in search of gems. The glaring omission is the 15 min Avant Garde piece written for the Carnival of Light rave during the sessions for Sgt Pepper. It was omitted because Harrison didn't like it, hence the inclusion of the instrumental versions of Eleanor Rigby and Within you Without You. Here in lies the problem with the whole Anthology project, genuinely interesting selections omitted in committee meetings because certain members don't approve.
There are gems to be had though. The Strawberry Fields selections are over 8 mins long and are fascinating. They are especially interesting because they really highlight the crucial role George Martin played in the genesis of the final version. It was on his suggestion that the song begin with the chorus and the first two verses are broken up with the chorus there in improving the flow and structure of the song completely. Not to mention the amazing job done joining two takes of different tempo and key together to make the final master. Other gems include alternative takes of Norwegian Wood, I'm Looking Through You, an early version of Tomorrow Never Knows and 2 early takes of Fool on the Hill. The live tracks here are surprisingly good especially the Blackpool gig but the 1966 selections from Japan are poor compared to the live selections on Anthology 1. Pull all the gems together with the choice cuts from Volume 1 and 3 and you have a fantastically listenable playlist.

A tresure trove for a Beatles fan
Review date: 2003-10-14 Rating: 10 out of 10

Although most of the 45 tracks are largely interesting works in progress there are also 4 self written tracks that can not be found anyehere else ....enough reason alone for a fan to buy this! Better than "Anthology 1" due to the higher quality songs exposed and better recordings of them but not as good as "Anthology 3".

Overall this is an interesting and enjoyable experience of the craft that went into the Beatles late Summer-Autumn period from the 1965 album "Help" to late 1967 "The Magical Mystery Tour".
