This soundtrack (along with Ry Cooder's for Paris, Texas and Ennio Morricone's for Once Upon a Time in America, to name two other examples) is the kind of music that CDs were made for. Some of it is so delicate, so quiet, that it could disappear underneath the rumble and noise of a vinyl LP. You'd never know this was the score to a comedy--even a gentle wisp of a comedy like Bill Forsyth's picture. Some of it could pass for Scottish- flavored ambient music by Brian Eno. "The Rocks and the Water" seems to rise up like the tide with electronic calls that suggest the music of whales or dolphins. The sound of the sea whispers behind several atmospheric tracks, but Knopfler's guitar is also featured up-front some of the more overtly melodic tunes. The overall impression is luminous and evanescent as the Northern Lights. --Jim Emerson
Not what i expected

Fantastic film, music was great so was most of the music in the soundtrack CD but what i found most disappointing was the music from the ceilidh or the Ace tones, now in the film its great tipical scottish music makes you happy make you what to dance but the CD is another story its very poor it sounds like its been recorded in a wind tunnel sort of drowned out does not have the same impacted than in the film but its still worth buying.

Disappointing except for KnopflerReview date: 2007-06-15 Rating: 6 out of 10I love this film! I love the theme and other incidental music composed and performed by Mark Knopfler, but this album is let down by the "source music" as played by The Actones seen in the ceilidh scenes of the film. OK, so a soundtrack album should have the music from the film, that I accept as an avid collector of film soundtracks, but in my opinion a good soundtrack should be able to stand up on its own without the images acompanying it. Largely this does that. So why only three stars? I cannot find anything I like in the Scottish folk music tracks; OK they are in the film and they work well in the film, but thet detract from the haunting themes from Knopflers guitar. I recorded the tracks I like from this album to my MP3 and forget the rest, Knopfler rocks, the ceilidh doesn't. Apart from that this is a good album worth getting for the gorgeous "none Acetones" incidental music and the main theme.Brilliant, a Superb SountdrackReview date: 2006-08-04 Rating: 10 out of 10This is simply one of the best soundtrack albums you can buy, and, remarkably, is just as good if you haven't seen the film.
It's beautiful, atmospheric music which is nevertheless very enjoyable and showed us another side to Mark Knopfler's music.
There's one (very enjoyable) vocal track, by Gerry Rafferty, but the rest of the music is instrumental, with some ethereal, almost classical themes.
One Australian TV channel played 'Stargazer' over the awful footage of the Challenger Space Shuttle, and the music had such beauty and dignity that it seemed most appropriate.
There's not a dud track and the closing Local Hero Theme is one of my all time favourite pieces of music.EscapisimReview date: 2003-11-01 Rating: 10 out of 10This music made a beautiful film ever more beautiful.Every time I hear this music reminds me of my homeland and like the ending of the film, it makes me think of what I miss about Scotland.
A Classic!Review date: 2003-07-19 Rating: 10 out of 10If you are into moody, stately and varied music, this is the Soundtrack that will totally engross you and the Themes stay in your mind long after you've stopped listening. It's also one of my fave movies! Wild theme, Theme From "Local Hero", the wonderful song with Gerry Rafferty is a plus, as well. Knopfler mixes Folk, Rock, Jazz and movie music with enough abandon to make it a " not-so-predictable" Soundtrack. Hope it comes out on a SACD or DVD-Audio. Buy it on any format as it is one of the best recorded Soundtracks in recent memory!
