Val Kilmer stars in The Ghost and the Darkness as Lt Col John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when two more unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Steven Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Great film! I come from Africa and now live abroad and whenever I get home sick or want to see Africa how I remember it, I watch this film.

Based on actual events, the Indian workers for a British railway construction company are terrorised by two adult male lions.
Reputed to have killed well over a hundred men, the lions are almost supernaturally hard to stop, as they repeatedly attack and kill.
Val Kilmer (with a not so convincing Scottish accent) is the engineer in charge of constructing a bridge, under a tight deadline from his superiors. His efforts to trap/kill the lions are fruitless and big game hunter, American, Remmington (Michael Douglas) arrives to take matters in hand. He too, is thwarted and eventually killed in his efforts to stop the 'Ghosts', as the lions have been named.

ok some douche-bags who reviewed this, (like the utter moron who compared it to jaws) dont seem to get this is based on a true story, wich is actually pretty amazing and scary in the fact that 2 larger than average male lions, chose to prey on humans as apose to general african wildlife
the film is hollywood... obviously as its a motion picture ffs?
but seriously, its not a cheesy horror, its suspensfull, and generally a good take on the events that went down

I find it strange that this movie can be compared to jaws, o.k. it involves an animal that is clever and kills people, there the similarity stops (unless you include S.S.).In fact it should be the other way round as this is based on a true story rather than a figment of an over active imagination.
Set in the late 1890`s in East Africa the film maintains a thrilling adventure for most of its 1.1/2 + hrs. There are a couple of slow moments but they do allow you to catch your breath. Overall a film well worth its money and star rating.
A real life thriller

The story is real. Two lions avenging the human race but of course wrong people. The African workers not the European bosses in the construction site are prey to two interestigly smart African lions. The bosses are very angry, the work is grounded to a halt. What next? Go lions!
