Excellent, Matheson cant disappoint!!
Review date: 2008-10-26 Rating: 10 out of 10
To be honest I was intrigued with the subtitle of this story "Men and women can no longer co-exist" and thought it would be something like Jack Ketchum's Ladies Night, in which a state of war prevails between the sexes, or The Disappearence by Philip Whyle, where they are inexplicably seperated.
The book doesnt fit either category really, the topic of womans liberation does feature but its not as centre stage as all that and its more a tale of group dynamics, as an unwelcome guest at a dinner party exerts an malevolent uncanny psychic ability over all gathered there.
The gathering is that of a TV producer who is preparing for an award ceremony and her friends, co-hosted by her husband who is a talk radio psychologist who has recently treated disenchanted female callers to his opinions on the failure of womans liberation.
The book is packed with brilliantly portrayed characters, very well developed, even those which only feature very briefly are brought to life by Matheson's skilled writing style. It's a suspenseful and terrific read, even before any uncanny or really horror element is injected into the plot, the discomfort and disquiet of social situations or dealing with people who present as disturbing and unsettlingly strange is really prevailant.
It has all the appearences of a short book, perhaps it belongs in a greater anthology but its just the correct length and at no point does any aspect of the story telling seem laboured, drawn out or worth skipping through. This edition is pretty cheap and cheerful, I dont know what the cover illustration has to do with the story and the typeset and page layout gives the impression of a small publisher but dont in any way let that put you off this great title.
Couldnt recommend Matheson enough as an author to anyone.
