End Of The Road..?
Review date: 2007-06-10 Rating: 4 out of 10

I really, really hope the movie is better than this when it comes out.I bought this having read the prequel story (which doesn't really add much to this new re-telling of the Transformers) and because i do want to see the film and can't wait (!). Now, I wasn't expecting Oscar winning material from a film by michael bay, but I do hope the characters are more engaging on screen than they are here.Kris Oprisko has written a very breathless and rushed adaption that seems to jump through key scenes so quickly. I found it hard to engage with the characters or care about their predicament.the main human character Sam comes across as spolit and unlikable and his romance with the obiligatory 'unattainable' female seems forced and tacked on,adding nothing to the unfolding events.the government agents were fairly bland.although there is a 'main' agent who interacts the most with Sam and his would be girlfriend (i can't even recall her name - i read this five minutes ago!) he's lost in a sea of other agents all of whom look identical (here, at least).the only characters i found myself attached to were the poor soldiers who get rubbed out by the initial decepticon attack!the main fault of this adaption is to get to the giant robots themselves and what they're after as quick as possible.that's fine if you're a fan of giant talking alien robots, but not so much fun if you're coming in fresh and the human perspective acts as your gateway to the transformers universe.alex milne's artwork is fine, and there's some good use of perspective, but his human characters are just awful.they look cartoony and out of place. the manga feel he was going for just hasn't worked unfortunately.his work here is, however, massively improved over his previous efforts on transformers, now he's drawing in a style that suits him and not in the Dreamwave house style.overall,a poor read and a disappointment for those of us hoping and praying that the new Transformers movie wont be rubbish.
