This is a beautiful book and of all the natural horsemanship ones i have come across it is the best for many reasons. It is well written, easy to understand, and beautifully illustrated with many photographs.I believe the author truly loves horses and is not just in the horseworld for financial gain.No equire book shelf would be complete without it.Check out the author riding a young horse for the first time with a rope round its neck ! (the horses neck not the author - truly magical - EnJOY!

Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body (an ancient greek rule)
Review date: 2002-07-10 Rating: 8 out of 10

In this book, K.F. Hempfling, explains a different method of approaching, handling and training horses without any force or gadget, from basic schooling to advanced moovements. Work from the ground, mounted work and body positioning is explained through a comprehensive text and series of photographs. The main goal : achieving natural collection and engagement without rein contact. Although a little controversary to the rule of "keeping a light contact with the horses' mouth" and the known lungeing methods, I found this book a useful reference mostly for horses blessed with the confirmation that allows and creates natural self carriage and collection. A good knowledge of horse training, schooling and riding would be necessary before benefiting totaly from this book. Using positive, senseful thinking and body language, the author guides the trainer and horse lover and/or owner through another dimension of communication and mutual trust with his equine partner.

Superb!

At last this wonderful book has been translated into english, and not before time. The book is set out in a clear concise way, with excellent photographs and diagrams to illustrate and enhance the meaning of the text.
Hempfling speaks pure and simple common sense, viewing human-behaviour from the horse perspective, to allow us to communicate with them.
The fine and subtle system of body-language is described well. Hempfling's methods require the absolute minimum of equipment, and he can't emphasise enough that this type of training doesn't use gadgets, but positive reinforcement and gentle, but always clear and firm, instruction.
Up until just recently, almost all horse training books and guides were anthropocentric and the horse has done his level best to understand us. It's time to redress this balance, and truly let the horses speak for themselves.
Anyone who is involved with horses and who wishes to improve their relationship with these wonderful creatures would do well to pick up this book and open up their minds to the possibilities laid out on its pages.
Lets hope that it's not quite so long before his other books are also translated.

Inspirational!!
Review date: 2001-12-26 Rating: 10 out of 10

This book is one that should be read by all riders, whatever their discipline. Hempfling's methods are simple and work totally with, not against the horse using subtle body language to communicate, to the highest levels of training. He appears to deplore the word 'dressage' and is scatheing, rightly, in so many instances, of modern dressage which calls for the horse to be permanently 'between hand and leg'.

Hempfling is aimimg at the ultimate lightness, invisible aids, 'collection on loose reins', which to me, is the epitome of training and so rarely seen these days.

The photos are a joy to behold- Klaus-Ferdinand's seat is exemplary and the expression of the horses says it all- what a contrast to so many photos of dressage horses to be seen in magazines, winning at the highest levels.Thoroughly recommended.

Really good

I think this book gives a refreshed reviw on modern and advancing equine training. Explaining the special partnership that can be developed between a human and a horse by simply talking their language instead of using reinforcing aids and force!!
