This book was a complete let down and is utterly uninspiring. Do not bother to buy this book!

Drivel

I read this book a year ago and and was so appalled by it that I threw it away. It is dull, unengaging and appallingly written (the latter I cannot emphasise enough). The author gives no actual advice for ultrarunners or multi-day eventers and in fact there is no running to talk of in the book apart from a half marathon he does on a treadmill (does that count?). The synopsis calls Mr Hines an exercise scientist - really? This book offers no training plan or guidelines on preparation for the MdS. Instead it is simply a personal account, and a boring one at that, of his life in London and the build up to the event, peppered with many annoying plugs of his other business interests.

Having just completed the MdS 2010 I can verify there was absolutely nothing in this book which contributed to my training or the event itself. As another reviewer also said, after reading this I too was worried that the event would be full of people like Mr Hines. Thank god it wasn't. Amongst other things it is also poorly presented as a book and looks more like an academic dissertation with it's double-spaced lines and blurry photos. If you want inspriration read something like 'Feet in the Clouds'. For information regarding the MdS search the internet or better still find someone who has done it. But don't waste your money on this.

Having completed the MDS when I was 55, ten years ago,the book brought back some of the memories and highlighted some of the differences but also the humor of the event. I liked the diary style, but thought the change of tense from past to present was irritating at times. I could relate to Selwyn who was my age and one of the tent mates. Had I not done the event but was entered for it I think I would have found it inspiring. I think anyone who enjoys a challenge will find the book enjoyable. But for me it was the memories of my own event brought back to life.

Dull dull dull

I bought this book as i was preparing for the 2009 MdS and was very disappointed in the approach of the author. You read almost 2/3rds of the book covering training runs and then a fairly brief and rather dull account of the race itself - photos were not up to much either.

Good read

After hearing that my son intends to enter this event next year i wanted to know what he is up against, It gives all the pitfalls so he can be aware,it also had a funny side to it as well. I bought another copy and sent it to him in th US
