Amazon.co.uk Review
Overlooked and underrated, Goodbye Lover is a tawdry, tasty film noir with a soft spot for its scheming anti-heroine. Sporting a platinum Lulu bob, a killer wardrobe and a Sound of Music fetish that inspires her to "climb every mountain" of bad-girl ambition, Patricia Arquette is perfectly cast as Sandra, the sweet but lethal wife of Jake (Dermot Mulroney), who works in a top-drawer ad agency with his brother Ben (Don Johnson). Weary stud Ben falls prey to simultaneous affairs with Sandra and his devoted secretary (Mary-Louise Parker). Cynical Detective Pompano (Ellen DeGeneres) unravels the murder-for-insurance plot while her clueless Mormon partner (Ray McKinnon) tries to keep pace. Combining mordant humour and rampant depravity, this deliciously dark comedy starts fast and never lets up, liberating director Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) from the sobriety of his previous work. The entire cast is great, but it's DeGeneres who makes this a recommended sleeper. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
Dermot Mulroneys brillience shines through!
Review date: 2001-09-06 Rating: 10 out of 10
As I looked through the reveiws for the films that came under the category 'Dermot Mulroney' nobody had very good responces! But in this terrfic movie his greatness shines through! He plays Jake an alcoholic who's wife Sandra is sleeping with his brother, when he finds out he isn't pleased and since Don his brother is sleeping with someone else neither is his wife Sandra! Together they plot to kill Don and what will happen you will just have to watch it! This is one of the best movies I've ever seen along side 'My Best Friends wedding' I recomend this film to everyone! Dermot Mulroney rules!

Worth taking a look atReview date: 2001-06-29 Rating: 8 out of 10Your first thoughts of this film may well be that the plotline seems rather similar to that video you rented out last weekend-but I think you will be quite surprised as the movie progresses. O'k, so it begins with the typical troubled couple and the unfaithful girlfriend, but there is a LOT more to this film than originally meets the eye, as you later find out! Throughout the film you just know that someones going to eventually get murdered (probably because you read the back of the video) but you'll still be pretty surprised at the outcome. You may need to see this film a couple of times before you really get into it, and it does take atleast half an hour to get into the good stuff, but is so worth it. The twisted ending and unexpected character personas will definetly grip you. An all in all worth watching film, and a great performance by Ellen Degeneres as the witty and unlikely, detective.
