This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a TV series, numerous comic-book spin-offs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music-video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work and soundtrack contributions from Queen), the original theatrical release made a hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his arch-enemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die) and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Highlander is dazzling, energetic and altogether confusing. --Jeff Shannon


Should be left in the 80's

I remember this film with nostalgia, it was one of the first action films I saw when I was a kid, and the plot it intriguing. However on watching it again as an adult you realize just how crap it really is. The premise is still interesting, but the dodgy Scottish accents, rubbish acting (apart from the Kurgun guy who is still entertainingly over the top) and woefully choroegraphed sword fights ruin it.

The sword fights really are appalling, about as convincing as the acting in `Rome' the series, which is a shame as good action sequences could have saved this from my bin.

An excellent 80s cult classic.

The Highlander franchise is one of those that can easily slip without being seen these days, after several comeback attempts, spin offs, two television outings and an animated series, watching the original film is quite alarming. The film is concise, original and entertaining. While at times it feels low budget, it feels entirely well made. The acting is perfect and the soundtrack by queen is beautiful.
This film is woth making an effort to see before commercialism makes it too easy to overlook.

Highlander a unique film . A Highland warrior Connor Mac Cloud of the Clan Mac Cloud who cannot die. Highly evocative the Scottish scene shots. Of camaraderie before going into battle, and the ironic cold banishment of Connor by his same kinsmen; after being mortally wounded in battle. Who cannot believe Connor surviving the mortal wound. A clansman saves him from a brutal beating. "Can you walk Connor" - "Aye I can bloody well walk out of here"! "I will not forget you" Connor utters to him, as he saves Connor from being burned. Then into modern day conflict battles but now one on one till -the end can only be one.
Inside this film is a gem! I wonder if the writer or the director at the time new; they would be creating a scene so powerful - and moving. That even Stanley kubic and Shakespeare could not have bettered . A scene so moving that will probably never be surpassed. The scene of Conner's and Heather's love and farewell in death to Heather his "blossom". The scene with Conner's call to Heather - their life and love together - then at near her death. Words that are spoken poignant and deeply moving. The scene starts to the unique vocal range of Freddie Mercury and the queen track "who wants to live forever". Penned by Brian May after seeing a rough cut of the film. If you not moved by this then your heart is of granite.

What a film - makes me want to buy a great Claymore Sword and swing it about.

i found this film for one ninety nine, and thats about as much as its worth...you know how some 80s movies stand the test of time...well this one doesn't...Lambert is shockingly bad! I did better make-up on our school production of Macbeth (i mean really!) and though Connery is a fantastic Ramirez, the entire film makes one wonder just how they made four more and a tv series...
That's my advice...wait til the tv series comes out! It may be only vaguely connected to the original...it may be directed like a music video...but it has a charm and tongue-in-cheek humour that is entirely missing in this coffee cup coaster of a film! And I'd back Adrian Paul against Lambert anyday...

Top Class highland fun

I would say this Highlander is the best of all the series. My firm believe is they should of left this as a one off. Some movies today work with sequels this one did not. I found watching it they had no idea they were going to be so sucessful so did not allow this story to carry on into the movies that followed.
Saying that Sean Conery is worth the buy alone not forgetting Lamberts fantastic performance also. Ok I'm Scotish so I saw the name 'Highlander' and snapped it up on VHS wasn't disappointed love the movie and so glad it is on DVD and for such a good price. I can say with no trouble at all that anyone thinking of buying this would not have to buy the other movies as this stands on it's own as a movie classic
