Synopsis
{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil\fcharset0 Arial;}} \viewkind4\uc1\pard\lang2057\fs18 Lucifer Box - the gorgeous butterfly of King Bertie's reign, portraitist, dandy and terribly good secret agent - is feeling his age. Assigned to observe the activities of fascist leader Olympus Mons and his fanatical Amber Shirts in a snow-bound 1920s New York, Box finds himself framed for a vicious murder. \par Using all his native cunning, Box escapes aboard a vessel bound for England armed only with a Broadway midget's suitcase and a string of unanswered questions. What lies hidden in the bleak Norfolk convent of St Bede? What is 'the lamb' that Olympus Mons searches for in his bid for world domination? And what has all this to do with a medieval prayer intended to summon the Devil himself? \par From the glittering sophistication of Art Deco Manhattan to the eerie Norfolk coast and the snow-capped peaks of Switzerland The Devil in Amber takes us on a thrilling ride that pits Lucifer Box against the most lethal adversary of his career : the Prince of Darkness himself. \par }

Lucifer returns in this second story from Mark Gatiss and it is just brilliant stuff. Would love a book that fills in the gap between this and the first story but I guess we can't have it all. Love it.

'. . . since Flashman'Review date: 2008-03-12 Rating: 6 out of 10Not a bad bit of escapist nonsense, but the '. . . since Flashman' comparisons are somewhat overblown. It was good fun, but very difficult to picture the principal villain Olympus Mons, leader of the burgeoning Anglo-American Fascists, without thinking of Sir Roderick Spode and his black shorts. A very entertaining readLucifer Box is backReview date: 2008-02-11 Rating: 10 out of 10Although I respect Mr Davywavy's eloquent review of the Devil in Amber I in no way think it deserves only 2 stars. Hence forth I have given it 5 stars to even it out. It's a cracking (and yes derivative) story but in what Indiana Jones movie does the hero bed both a bell boy and the leading lady (on seperate on occasions) and then proceed to give out pithy quotes whilst running naked in only a towel chased by the 1930's NYPD? Say no more. Enjoy! It's a 4 star book for sheer bloody adventure and intelligence. Hurrah!gloriousReview date: 2008-01-09 Rating: 10 out of 10Buy buy buy! more ripping yarns from Gatiss.A truly great storyteller in an old school way but with a modern twist of humour.Marvellous from start to finish!Must try harderReview date: 2007-10-16 Rating: 4 out of 10I really wanted to enjoy this book. I'm a fan of Mark Gatiss and The League of Gentlemen, and enjoyed the first Lucifer Box adventure enough to seek out 'The Devil In Amber'. Sadly, this for me was a massive letdown. The plot was predictable and meandered around aimlessly, there was no feeling of tension or genuine intrigue, and the characters, good and bad, were completely uninspiring nor in any way interesting. I read it in a day, and upon completion felt that was how long it took to write. I really think Gatiss wrote this on autopilot, and for me has sadly tipped the character of Lucifer Box from rakishly heroic cad to an arrogant bore. I really wanted this series to be a rip-roaring 'boys-own' style adventure yarn. It barely tries, hence fails miserably.
Very average.
