Holes By Louis Sachar (For Mrs Sargent, my english teacher!)
Review date: 2003-11-01 Rating: 10 out of 10

I first read this book when I was 9 years old, (I am now 13) so I didn't understand it. When I first saw the book, I thaught "Okay, er, why do I want to read a boke about holes, and why is there a funny spotty lizard on the front?!" I was confused, which is probably why I read it. I was curious, so I read it. I read it agen, four more times. I was then 10 years old, so I still wasn't sure what it all ment. I put the book at the back of my wardrobe, and left it there for three years. Then, one day in my english lesson, my teacher, Mrs Sargent, took out many copies of the book and told the class we were to read it. Then, I finally understood.
The book is about a young, over weight boy, Stanley Yelnats, who believes he's cursed by his dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather, the very first Stanley Yelnats. (Note: his surname is hais first name backwards!) is wrongly accused of nicking a famous basketball player'strainers, who had given them to the homeless shelter to raise money by selling the trainers for thousands of dollars to rich folk.
Stanley Yelnatssays that they fell from the sky, which was true, though no one believed him. He had been walking under a by-pass. He gets taken to court, who sentances him to prison, or Camp Green Lake. "Be quick to make your decision, vacancies don't last long at Camp Green Lake" advises the judge. Stanley takes Camp Green Lake. He has a 9 hour journey there, then is told to get up at 4:30 AM, have his breakfast and dig a hole, 6ft wide and 6ft deep. He has to get up so early to miss the hottest part of the day. He makes some friends (or enimmies, which ever way you look at it!) called: X-Ray (Alan), Armpit (Theodore), Squid (Rex), Zigzag (Ricky), Magnet (Jose) and Zero (Hector Zeroni).
He ends up runing away from Camp with Hector (Zero). They become best friends.
My favourite part is when all is explaned at the end. It is now one of my favourite books. I would recomend it for 12+ years as anyone younger wouldn't understand.
Thanks for reading my review, I hope it will help!

holes by louis sachar
Review date: 2003-10-29 Rating: 10 out of 10

The book `holes` was written by a man called louis savhar. on the front cover is a dry, bare, desert, with a green and yellow spotted lizard with fierce red eyes. it makes you think that something deadly will happen and makes it look really interesting.
the book is about a boy called stanley yelnats, who is said to commited stealing a baseballs stars sneakers. it is set in texas, where there used to be a beautiful lake but it dried up. stanley`s sent to camp green lake which is the old lake just without no lake! he has to dig five foot holes by five foot holes everyday, atarting at four thirty am to beat the hot sun. the warden is trying to find some precious jewels which are said to be there. stanley soon makes friendawith extracts from past and present.
The part i liked best was when zero and stanley found the suitcase and the warden said "thank-you boys, you have been a big help" and they had just sneaked back into the camp. it was breath taking because you didnt know what was going to happen.
The part i liked least was when zero was telling Stanley about how his mom used to leave him and say she`ll be back and one day she never came back. the way he described it was so sad. i liked this bit because it was moving but it was very sad.
The main characters were Stanley Yelnats, Zero(Hector Heroni), Mr sir, Mr Pendanski and the warden. but mostly Stanley(Caveman) and Hector (zero).
The character i liked best was Zero because he didnt know how to read, write or spell much and when he was trying to sound out the words or say the actual word, it was amusing. he was also king and helpful. when stanley was teaching him he was willing to help him do something back in return. he digged part of stanleys hole whilst stanley tought him in the evening. he was quite witty at times aswell.
The character i disliked the most was Mr.Sir because he was so bossy and always really rude to everybody. He thinks hes mr perfect and he can do nothing wrong. he really annoyed me just being him.
I would recommend this book to a friend because we read this book in class and people with all different tastes of reading and ability enjoyed it and the text was quite easy to understand. it was really clever how they mixed the past and present together and then it ended up joining together in the end. i would recommend this book to any one, any age, any reading tastes and any reading ability. it is a superb book which deserves five out of five stares on the rating mark.
