I find it hard to see how anyone can not rate this book highly - an enlightening, thought provoking read
Review date: 2010-08-31 Rating: 10 out of 10

If you are interested in fitness - even slightly, then this book is a good buy. Mixing personal experience of physical endeavours (and boy Mike has pushed himself in some mammoth events with the likes of Ranulph Fiennes)with scientific information and findings about the capacity of the human body.

I found the book absolutely riveting and inspiring - very re-readable and quite incredible in places. Makes one realise that we were 'born to run' and that keeping agile and active is something we all need to keep in the foreground of our minds. Also makes you realise you are not too old to start... some of the most amazing feats have been conducted by some of the oldest of people. A real eye opener.

Mike Stroud is a wonderful host - self effacing, humble, witty, charming and importantly very knowledgable. It is a pity he hasn't written more books, I have enjoyed this so much.

No more excuses, get up and start getiing your body working - it will enrich your life.

Brilliant - interesting and inspirational
Review date: 2010-05-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

In a relatively short book Mike Stroud touches on many different aspects of human performance and physiology, with colourful explanations that draw you in and leave you thinking how great it is to be alive. The book is non-technical and hugely accessible regardless of interest in science. It should however come with one warning - it will make you want to run a marathon!

Informative, entertainment and inspiring

I loved this book. I am just starting off on yet another new year of 'get fit' resolution and I'm always looking for fresh inspiration - well this book has it. Feeling 'tired' so can't go for your walk? 'It's too cold to train'? 'I'm not fit enough to do x, y, z'? This book will blow these excuses away when you see what Mike, Ranulph and all the others took on and acheived in spite of various normally very acceptable reasons not to, such as recent heart bypass surgery, being 70 years of age and only having walked the hills at the weekends etc etc etc. It was very informative from the physiology point of view too but without getting very technical. I would consider myself knowledgable in that area but I learnt a lot and again, no more can I use any excuses that I am not able for it. We are ALL able for ANYTHING we decide to do. Again, I love this book and I intend to read it regularly. Mike Stroud is an unassuming but remarkable man and his writing style is to the point but relaxed, informative but easy to read and he remains humble in his achievements. Well done Mike and keep it up.

Enjoyable but out of date

This was a fascinating and inspirational book which I thoroughly enjoyed. the descriptions of the endurance events that the author has participated in and the evolutionary biology behind them were excellent. However the book is quite old now - although it has had the 7 marathons added the basic body of the text is unchanged from when it was first published and science has moved on. We now know that far from being largely vegetarian paleolithic man probably ate plenty of meat. Although the author mentions in passing that we are not designed by evolution to eat grains he still stresses a high carb diet for energy and endurance. Anyone interested in the idea of eating as nature intended should check out the books by Loren Cordain and if you are into sports in a big way his Paleo Diet for Athletes.

The book makes a good intellectual read for those who have little idea of human biology. It leaves you feeling motivated to walk a little further and climb a few more stairs a day. the chapter- survival of the fattest particularly interesting.

Mike Stroud outlines a few of his adventures in the book but they do not go into much detail of the emotional reactions to difficult situations. Also a more detailed explanation of the environments would have had the reader understand the how difficult the situations were overall.
