Before you view 'The Con Artiste' I would like to give you a brief history of the sketch. The original concept of a seemingly intelligent man trying to pass something off as his own when common knowledge dictates that this was not the case came when I was drafting ideas for sketches during A Levels, and this was always my favourite premise. I scripted it properly in Autumn 2006 and produced it as a piece for radio. Last month the opportunity arose through work to perform it on live television on a Sky channel called Fame TV. They asked me to do any talent I wanted so I enlisted my colleague Adam to play one part while I would play the other. I scripted the sketch from scratch making it appropriate for television and got hold of the necessary props. We had a month to rehearse it after the script was written for 24th May, but then on 24th April, disaster struck. It turned out we were going that day, 3 days after it had been written and no rehearsals or line-learning undertaken. Adam couldn't commit to learning and rehearsing it in one day so I undertook to play both roles myself. So -- at 10am on 24th April I went home to get my props, memorizing the script on the way, came back to work and rehearsed it, then at 1:30 went off to the studio to do the sketch. I'm of the opinion that the quality of the performance does not do justice to the quality of the writing but it's still a lovely little sketch, albeit a tad sloppy with a dual-role performance. Although I have heard the opinion that the dual-performance works better than a standard double header might. All feedback is most welcome; nay -- encouraged.
Keep your eyes open -- The Con Artiste will soon be appearing on a comedy stage near YOU!
PS -- the first couple of lines got cut off, but in this period it is revealed that the sketch is set in a second-hand art store and the behatted gentleman desires to sell his work to the shopkeeper.
